Opposing the Employee Free Choice Act
In recent months and weeks,
AAHOA has sent out multiple Member Alerts urging members to contact
their elected representatives to voice AAHOA’s strong opposition
to the mis-named Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA), aka the "Card-Check
Bill". In the Alerts, AAHOA voices its strong opposition to taking
away the rights of employees to use a secret ballot voting process when
deciding whether to form a union in the workplace, and discusses
the devastating impact the Act will have on hoteliers and small
business owners around the country.
AAHOA also distributed an
“Open Letter to Members of the U.S. Congress in Opposition to the
Employee Free Choice Act” to all of our members and requested
their signatures. As this issue goes to print, over 400 AAHOA
members have signed the Open Letter petition. These signatures
will be sent to key Democratic Senators, and other Senators who support
the EFCA, when the Senate reconvenes.
Although the Democrats failed
to attain a filibuster-proof Senate in the election on November 8, 2008,
they nevertheless made decisive progress. Combined with the
victory of President-elect Obama, this means that the EFCA remains a
real threat to small businesses in the months and years ahead.
AAHOA members who have not already done so are encouraged to sign the
Open Letter and fax it to Managing Attorney Jordan Gillman at (404)
816-2724. The open letter and the Member Alerts concerning the
EFCA are available below.
