Although some cities or areas of the country have been hit harder than others with bed bug infestations, this is still a problem that all AAHOA members and hoteliers need to keep an eye on. Besides awareness, it is also wise to have an aggressive and proactive approach for dealing with bed bugs should you ever have any problems at your hotels. For those who are unaware, bed bugs are blood-feeding parasites that have a light tan color. When they feed on blood, they turn to more of a dark-reddish brown color. They can easily be seen by the naked eye, but typically stay hidden. They can’t fly, so they are usually carried into hotels by guests or sometimes employees. Typically, they live in bed frames, behind headboards and baseboards, in furniture, behind pictures, in mattresses or box springs, and in other cracks and crevices.
