AAHOA’s Hoteliers Push Forward Impactful National Advocacy Agenda in Washington, D.C.

WASHINGTON, D.C., Mar. 14 – This week, as part of its 2024 Spring National Advocacy Conference (SNAC), the Asian American Hotel Owners Association (AAHOA) hosted more than 200 key AAHOA leaders and members for two days in Washington, D.C. The Conference opened with a legislative learning session at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center, followed by an evening Congressional Reception at the Cannon House Office Building, and then a full day of Congressional meetings.

AAHOA Advocates for the Industry Following President Biden’s State of the Union Address

WASHINGTON, D.C., Mar. 8 – Last evening, U.S. President Joe Biden delivered a State of the Union address, providing an optimistic overview of the economy. His statements touched on themes ranging from the Russian-Ukraine war, immigration policies, civil rights, the Israel-Hamas travesty, humanitarian aid in Gaza, forgiving college loans, and tackling over-priced prescriptions.

ATLANTA, Ga., Mar. 6 – As the largest hotel owners association in the world, AAHOA (Asian American Hotel Owners Association) extends its congratulations to Kevin Carey as the newly appointed interim President and CEO of the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA). With experience and leadership in the hospitality sector, Mr. Carey's appointment marks a new milestone in advancing the industry, following the announced resignation of former AHLA President and CEO William (Chip) Rogers. AAHOA Statement on Murder of Hillcrest Motel Owner Pravin R. Patel

ATLANTA, Ga., Feb. 14 – AAHOA issued the following statement in response to the murder of veteran hotel owner/operator, Pravin R. Patel (76), of Sheffield, Alabama: America's hotel owners are deeply saddened, shocked, and outraged by this senseless act of violence against a small business owner that cost him his life. Police say the 34-year-old suspect was arrested and is now in custody after he shot Pravin R. Patel, the owner of the Hillcrest Motel, on the morning of February 8. A local TV station shared that according to court documents they obtained, a felony complaint states Patel tried to get the suspect to leave before the shooting occurred.

Industry Organizations Continue Analysis of Appropriate Use of Local Lodging Tax Revenue

Wilsonville, OR– The Oregon Restaurant & Lodging Association (ORLA) and the Asian American Hotel Owners Association (AAHOA) are collaborating to keep a watchful eye on lodging tax spending by local governments across Oregon. Currently, there are over 100 different local lodging taxes in jurisdictions across the state which generate over $220 million in revenue for city and county governments of all shapes and sizes. “The task of staying on top of local lodging tax spending across Oregon is one of our most crucial roles,” said Jason Brandt, President & CEO for the Oregon Restaurant & Lodging Association. “Our friends and joint members at AAHOA are an important national ally. Oregon Asian Americans own 60% of all hotels in the state and as such, AAHOA serves as a critical partner in navigating the various formulas for our industry taxes while monitoring the way in which those dollars are spent in local economies.”

Washington, D.C. — Today, Representatives Russell Fry (SC-07), Ted Lieu (D-CA), Ann Wagner (R-MO), and Robert Garcia (D-CA) introduced the Trafficking Survivors Relief Act. This legislation would provide federal criminal record relief to survivors of human trafficking who committed a non-violent offense as a direct result of having been a victim of trafficking.

AAHOA Statement on Choice Hotels' Full Slate of Nominees for Wyndham Board

ATLANTA, Ga., Jan. 24 – AAHOA continues to monitor the developments involving the proposed merger by Choice Hotels International (“Choice Hotels”) of Wyndham Hotels & Resorts (“Wyndham”), including a press release issued by Choice Hotels on Monday that proposed a full slate of “independent, highly qualified individuals for election at the 2024 Annual Meeting of Wyndham Hotels & Resorts.” The Choice Hotels’ statement listed the nomination of eight individuals, including an AAHOA Lifetime Member.
